new from Bob Sorge

A few days ago I was handed a copy of Bob Sorge's new book, Power of the Blood.

I need to preface this with a disclaimer. I know Bob personally, and he is ranked in the top 7 nicest people on the planet. He really should be in the top 5, and two of those in the top 7 are on oxygen, so he will be soon one way or another. Bob, his wife, Marci, and their three grown children are all plugged in here at IHOP. I've been blessed to spend time around their table. I love the Sorges...but I still carried his book around for several days before cracking the binding.

Last night, I picked the book up and read six pages before going to bed. Six pages isn't like reading War and Peace. What can you say in six pages? Apparently a lot, if you're Bob Sorge. Bob is a writer's writer. I read his stuff and literally say "Wow" out loud. It can be awkward in public places.

I finished chapter one this morning, and what struck me is the entire chapter is about God. That may seem like an odd thing to say, but when was the last time you read a book about God? Most books in the Christian world right now are not about God as much as they are about you.
  • Your walk with God.
  • Your search for God.
  • God's Perfect Will for Your Life.
  • How You can Make a Difference
  • Finding Your Inner Monk
Ad nauseum infinitum...

It's much easier to write about you and I than it is to write about God. You and I change, bend, twist in the wind...if the book gets it wrong, no big deal. Wait long enough and what you wrote ends up being true about somebody.

It's different with an unchanging God. You write about God much more concisely. You want to get it right the first time. You don't want to write a sentence about God only to have to retract it later because you got it wrong.

Chapter 1, How God Feels About the Cross, explores the emotion God felt watching His Son on the cross, and how those emotions affect God's dealings with those who accept or reject His blood.

Just reading the first six pages of Power of the Blood made me go to bed thinking differently about God. It seems like six pages written about God are better than a thousand written elsewhere. I'm looking forward to chapter two, once I can come to terms with chapter one.

I couldn't agree more about Bob's writing, life and character.
