Music to my Ears

Music to my ears. You know, that's one of the strangest phrases, when you think about it. If it's music, well....duh. Music to my nose doesn't have the same poetic ring and makes a whole lot less sense, I can tell you that.

One of my favorite Christmas gifts this year was an iTunes gift card. I spent a portion of it filling in gaps in collections and buying one-offs that I just had to have (...like Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama so I could make a ring tone out of it...). I bled the thing down to $10 and decided I wanted to buy an entire album by someone that I wasn't familiar with. It's too easy (and a mark of aging) to only listen to the stuff you know.

I stumbled on to The Fray and mashed down on the BUY NOW button. They sound like Lifehouse had Lifehouse been old enough to remember Hootie and the Blowfish. I dig'm.

You can watch the video of the title cut of their cd, "How to Save a Life" by clicking here and launching the media player. It'll be music to your eyes.

Anyone else get some music for Christmas? What are you listening to right now, as you read this?

Ben Kweller and The Dave Matthews Band. I just discovered them, if you can believe that. And it came from watching "Because of Winn-Dixie" where DM had a cool cameo.

As I read this, right now? The prayer room of course. The new decor is smashing, by the way.

Since you asked, I used up my gift card on:

1. Complete Works of Silvestre Revueltas (a mexican composer who wrote some very LOUD film music - I heard La Noche de los Mayas @ the Kennedy Center recently)

2. Thomas Hampson singing Cole Porter (including "Eli Yale", Harvard's football anthem)

3. Home by Laura Woodley (you know a CD is profoundly anointed when you find yourself weeping during your Philly commute). Her pianist is in the same league with Andre Previn -a master.

4. David Ruis' Fragrant Oil (shocked to see this is 9 years old. This CD got me through many a solo prayerslot and I needed to juice on it.)

The prayer room naturally, and I was present when Fragrant Oil was birthed in Winnipeg at WCV.

My daughter got her 2 fav cd's for Christmas so we all get to listen to them - either loudly from downstairs or loudly in the living room stereo. But they are good ones - Brooke Fraser and Katy Ray. Both fantastic Kiwi singers. Then I got my shipment from IHOP book store and finally get to listen to the Merchant Band and Audra Lynn and Justin Rizzo and Luke Wood!!! WOW! I get all the words to some of the songs I hear at the PR!! Fantastic stuff!

I was sampling The Fray last night, but didn't get it yet. It was on two of iTunes 'top picks' lists and many many a person has recommended it.

Maybe I'll pick it up later today.

And right now I'm only listening to the clicking of my keyboard. It was a long loud day at IHOP...
