Active Atheism

Some time back, I wrote about a Wired Magazine article on the New Atheists. The article describes a loose conglomeration of aggresive atheists who are becoming more militant in their disbelief. For those of you who yawned (yes, I saw you...), please note: The New Atheists are forming a youth movement.

MSNBC has an article about a group of over 400 young people who are doing everything they can to deny the existence of God, assuming that if there is a God, this will send them directly to hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Their latest method is posting their own five second denial of the Holy Spirit on YouTube. Their organizing website, the Blasphemy Challenge , instructs them to:
...record a short message damning yourself to Hell, you upload it to YouTube, and then the Rational Response Squad will send you a free The God Who Wasn't There DVD. It's that easy. You may damn yourself to Hell however you would like, but somewhere in your video you must say this phrase: "I deny the Holy Spirit."
Seems like a lot of trouble to assert your skepticism. Maybe we should call it YouFoolTube .

To be clear, I really don't want to make light of this. It is mortifying. It is also a very telling sign about the day in which we live. Our children will grow up in a world increasingly hostile to values that were mainstream in our childhood. The question is whether or not we are preparing them for it.

Anything on that site about questioning whether Mohammed really is Allah's prophet? Or Allah/Buddha/etc...? That site is obviously not about athiesm as much as ratcheting up hostility to the Judeo-Christian values. Just another people group to pray into the kingdom.

Oh man - I woke up this morning about 3am with the exact same thought. Is anyone out there orchestrating a mass denial of the existence of any other religious leader? politician? comic book character? Nascar driver?

"My name is Randy, and I deny the existence of Dale Earnhardt, Jr."

Them's fightin' words in some places.

This is insane. When you think of Atheists, you think of them denying God, no absolute truths, etc. But to have young people declare the denial of the Holy Spirit, this is a new one. You don't get much more blatant than that.

FYI - if you said those words about Dale down in these parts, you would be strung up faster than you can get your grits smothered and covered.

Randy, your lunacy is so totally predictable.

All this "challenge" is, is designed to get a rise out of people like you.

Looks to me like it's succeeded. If the threat of 400 free-range atheists doing what comes naturally is enough for you to start babbling senselessly about a world "increasingly hostile to values" of your childhood - when those atheists have always been present, though not necessarily visible to you - then you're just proving the organizers point, that people like you are just nuts and completely out of touch with reality.

By the way, all this is is a ploy to sell DVD's. Funny how you quoted the part about the "free" DVD but you fail to notice the obvious significance of it.

You guys maybe ought to get more sleep.

If I seemed threatened by the 400 young atheists, then I didn't communicate well. I was just pointing out the recently aggressive stance of atheism as a whole and their willingness to put their money (in the form of advertising and movie production) where their values are.

And nothing speaks of sincerity like an anonymous comment. Thanks for your concern for my state of mind.
