PodThoughts

OK, I've been told a number of times that I need to podcast. Before I commit and then crash and burn in a public forum, I have a theory to float by you. Answer me via email or in the comment section.

My theory is this: Most people who don't listen to podcasts because they're too long. Short, more frequent podcasts are better than twenty minute drone-ons. True or false? Any other thoughts on this whole deal?

it is really about about content, the podcasts that I listen to range from 5 minutes (OutwardBuzz) to over an hour (MarsHill Seattle, MacCast, Off the Hook). If you are gonna do it on a regular basis then shorter is better otherwise you can typically get away with 15-20 minutes, again as long as you got good content.
Look forward to seeing what you do.

Actually, Janet - I'm generally in the same camp! I think listeners will always outnumber readers.

I still listen to your Burning Man Talk (50 mins) and your Conspiracy of Justice talk (45 mins) often - they blew my boundaries and God used you big time to shape the course of mine and Kate's lives. But for regular Podcasts I would agree with the comments about content. Randy, the thing that, for me at least, makes you stand out is your ability and willingness to speak what He has placed on your heart. Dude, if that takes 5 minutes, it takes 5 minutes. If it takes 1 hour and 5 minutes, it takes 1 hour and 5 minutes. If God put it on your heart for you to speak out, I'll listen (just choose your bit rate accordingly ;-) )

Seriously, speak your heart - don't think time, think content. Don't fall into the trap of podcasting blah de blah every day - podcast to change the world - that is what makes you you - your ability to inspire a desire to change the world in the people with whom you connect; and I love you for that.

I prefer reading. My reason is more economic than anything else. The library computers do not have speakers. I thought about podcasting once, but I don't think yelling at the top of my lungs will accomplish much other than getting me arrested. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

How bout keepin the blog going and adding some podcasts on the side?

Maybe add some video because technology is so cool nowadays. Think if people could actually WATCH you while they are LISTENING. I think it might work, call me crazy.

I suspect I'm being mocked.

Personally I'm all about reading over listening. I have way more blogs bookmarked than subscriptions to podcasts, and I don't keep up with the podcasts. Maybe you could use podcasting to boost blog traffic.

I think a podcast would be great. As Andy & others have said I think it's not a question of how long but what you've got to say....yeah if it were every day or two shorter would be better but even then if you were actually saying something I'd make the time to listen....that's the problem with the whole net / blog / podcast thing, lots out there but a question of how much is actually worth reading....your blog is most def worth reading so if you kept the podcast in the same vein I'd listen.

If you want two people besides yourself listening than make them long. If you want the masses (3 or more) than go for the short bursts. "Blessed are the short winded for they shall be heard again." It's in Matthew 5...I am sure of it.
